R2's AI seems a bit less aggressive than in R1 (at least in certain campaigns), so I'll give that difficulty slider a notch to the right. Hard campaign difficulty gives the AI enough economic bonuses to fuel its aggression, so you don't have the 'luxury' of building up in a more 'historical' way. in RTW, Medium campaign difficulty allows for much more reasonable diplomacy, and the AI still presents a challenge, especially if you avoid the temptation to just blitz with your early units. I enjoy it more, it makes early and mid battles more interesting, and late game battles a challenge because the AI sometimes builds doomstacks that I then have to outplay with my "realistic but not min/maxed" forces. The difficulty comes from the tools you are given, not just the settings of the game.Īs for difficulty from the way you play, I tend to build armies I feel are reasonably realistic with a mixture of unit qualities, instead of just stacking the best units I can afford. A friend of mine described the Black Seas Colonies as "Cimmeria (Easy,) Pergamon (Normal,) Colchis (Hard.)" What he meant was that Cimmeria has a decent roster and a strong starting position, Pergamon's roster and position aren't so good but still okay, and Colchis starts off with a weak roster and position. Overall, I want to play the game in a more historical fashion I find fun, instead of going for the higher difficulties and having to game the system to win.ĭifficulty can also come from the factions you play, and the way you play them. But I never take battle difficulty above Hard, because I find it just unbalances the game and makes battles a grind fest. I will occasionally play Very Hard Campaign/Hard Battles if I'm playing a faction that's got an easier start, for example Octavian in Imperator Augustus. The AI gets some bonuses to help compensate for the inherent disadvantages it has against a human (the AI is in my view good, but still a skilled player will be better,) without it getting into obviously cheating territory.
